and generally talk down to people. Or mention just how much this kind of question annoys them. Then when you check out there question history you see they have a billion points but there last asked question was 3 months ago. How did they get so smart never asking a question or are they just full of it?

This is a public forum, and by posting in a public forum, you are implicitly agreeing to be subject to public comment (and ridicule). If you don't like, don't come.

Of course it's not fair but on a site like this we are all taking part in a democratic debate where we witness opinions on a wide variety of topics.

It's because some of the answers are controversial and we might disagree with them that makes it so interesting. The type of person you talk about do not ask questions because they think they know it all.

When I ask a question I feel that I am admitting that there could be people who know more than me. Of course there are. On the other hand between us we can share what we do know.

Oops! I think I am pontificating.

Doesn't really matter what people say to me. everyone has their own opinion and I think they have a right to, just as I feel I have a right to mine and I'm sure you do yours.
If they ask a question or not doesn't really matter. Most of my questions are for people I know that don't have a computer or don't want to take the time to sign up. I ask them like it is me, but it is not. Another thing that goes with that is that everyone here is probably masking themselves to a certain degree. That is what you get with the internet in general. If they are in a good mood you get a good answer and if not then don't listen, and don't take it personally! lol. some of this stuff is so funny!

Some might argue that putting a pretentious word like "pontificate" into your post is the very definition of pontification. Get a grip. If you don't want a wide variety of responses to your question, ask your family and friends instead of a million strangers.

I don't really care. This is an open forum and people should be able to say (just about) anything they like.

I do personally draw a line at racist, sexist or homophobic abuse.

But as the saying goes, "Sticks and stones may break my bones but names will never hurt me".

I'm one of the people who answer much more than asking. But that's just down to a lack of imagination rather than a need to get points!

And when I do ask questions no one ever bleeding answers them, which tends to be a bit depressing........

I think this is slightly cynical. I haven't asked any questions yet nor do I have 'a billion points' but I have answered where I have felt it to be useful and found some interest and learning in reading others questions and answers. Why don't you just enjoy what interests you instead of being annoyed by what doesn't.

I think to ask if it is fair is the wrong question. I think that maybe you want to ask if it is right for people to pontificate, and I think that basically the site is made for people to say what they want and how they want to. This means implicitly that it gives people the right to give their opinions in any which way they chose. Is that fair... then yes, we live in a democracy and have freedom of speech, even if you don't like what some people have to say or the way they say it.

I do not see a problem with someone just answering, as long as their answers actually MEAN something.

What I don't like is someone asking a question, then giving this long rant about an answer they don't want to hear. People with agendas and opinions should just write a blog or shut up all together. People come here with serious questions. I just answered one where someone felt suicidal. Do we want smarta$$es answering questions like that? It is really quite disturbing.

Of course. People come here for all sorts of reasons. I ask few questions, but answer many, confining myself to issues where I have expertise. Since I am a long time student of science and philosophy, that covers a fair amount of ground. A number of people have remarked that my answers have been particularly helpful, which does, of course, tend to brighten one's day.

Do you even have an idea of the meaning of the word 'pontificate'. Do some research before opening you trap!
