You should format it first just to see if it's an error on the memory card. If after you format it, and the PSP still can't read it, then you need to try another memory stick. If you're still having the same problem, then you have a faulty PSP. If it works, then you have a faulty memory stick.

Try a card from one of your friends to verify that the card is corrupted or not before you spend the money, If the new card does not work you have an issue with your psp.

Maybe the PSP couldn't read the memory stick or its dirty,try blow the chip part of it a few times then see how it works

before you take it back try reformatting it and did you check that is was the right stick cause it needs to be a memory duo stick for it to work in a psp

ether you removed it when you weren't supposed to or there is a corruption in your memory card which means you have to buy a new one. This is probably why your PSP could not recognize the memory stick inserted.
