i dont smoke it but i think it should be legalized because its unreal how many people smoke it anyway....some daily. why bother prohibiting something that cannot be enforced??however, it should be like alcohol, there should be a time and a place for it and one time is NOT before driving or going to work.

I am undecided only because I can understand both sides of the issue. The pro side makes claims of its medicinal uses(which have never been proven or disproven)and makes the comparisons to tobacco and liquor. In the comparing the vices,I can understand the point.People will smoke marijuana whether it is legal or not. They see it as a harmless vice similar to drinking or cigaretes. They make claims that if the governments could tax it in the same manner,it would be legal.
The con side claims that marijuana leads to harder drug use and crime, again, neither proven nor disproven(Remember those anti-drug movies in school?I recall one that featured Sonny and Cher!!)The claim has also been made that marijuana has more cancer causing compounds in it than tobacco(I'm not sure about this, either).
I think that like alcohol,it does alter your ability to function. And like alcohol, would contribute to more traffic accidents and fatalities than are necessary.Would there be a test for field sobriety? What would be the "legal limit"?
Then of course you do have the government issue involved.Would the tax be similar to cigarettes? What would be the legal age to purchase?Where would you purchase you marijuana?
I personally think that every "foreign substance" we breathe into our lungs contributes to some form of cancer. With health care costs as they are now I am not sure what the additional cost to the public would be due to what I think would be increased usage.I think many people don't smoke because of the criminal aspect and if it were not for that part would become an ocasional user.
I don't see it as a harmless vice,as all vices carry some risk. But I also don't see marijuana as the end of society as we know it.I don't need to know everything that goes on in your home until it affects me.I would be interested in seeing open and honest research done, the public being given the risks both pro and con,and then having an opportunity to vote its legality.

Not just marijuana, i'd legalize them all. Prohibition does not work and the war on drugs is lost. The law makes criminals out of people who smoke dope, but not those that drink alcohol, and we all know how dangerous and life destroying alcohol is. BUT, just because alcohol is legal, we are NOT all Alcoholics, just as if you legalized all drugs, we wouldn't suddenly all be round the back shooting heroin into our veins.
So lets just think outside the box for a little while people, could we control it, tax it and stop people mugging old ladies to get money for it? Yes!
So for me it's a resounding tick in the YES box!

I am for it , last years estimated cash value of marijuana was 35 billion thats alot of tax money that could be put to good use , people are gonna smoke so atleast get something good out of it. I don't smoke but I think it's no worse than beers or smoking and I would laugh if the government told me i couldn't do either

I think it should be legalized...BECAUSE, all the reasons that are being given for it being illegal are bogus. It is NOT a gateway drug ( I know ). My brain is in no way shape or form damaged. Alcohol is much more damaging AND addicting then marijuana., yet legal.
It is lagal were I'm originally from, and there are no problems. People that smoke it ( including our teenagers) will be able to buy it, whether it is against the law or not.

I support the idea of legalizing it. I would much rather deal with a person that is high than with someone who is drunk or a chicken head any day of the week. If you have ever seen anyone that is wasting away from cancer, or someone in severe acute chronic pain and this is what helps them be able to eat or relieves the pain, or evens decreases the intensity of glaucoma..it should be legalized.

I say legalize it already!! Alcohol is legal and let me tell ya, I'd rather have a person buzzed from weed driving than someone drunk! Plus then the government could have a take on it and maybe use some of the revenue for education and homelessness!

For.
But...there are bad ways of legalizing it, and good ways. It would take me too long to explain, but basically it would have to be strictly monitored, of course. Penalties for driving while stoned should be as harsh if not more harsh than current DWI laws. Care should be taken to keep it out of the hands of anyone under 19, as impossible as that may be. Taxes gleaned from sale would go directly to promotion of renewable energy sources. Also, I would promote the use of eating it, as smoking any substance, regardless of what it is, is unhealthy for the lungs.

I say legalize it but have a higher age like 30. It is a natural plant. They could make hydro illegal but natural bush legal. You don't snort it or inject it. In some countries it is used for medicinal purposes. If you go off it for a while it won't kill you getting back on it. The worst that will happen is you'll green out not od.

Personally I am against it because every pot head I have known over the years has graduated from pot to much worse habits.
I happen to believe that it is a gateway drug based on what I've seen "friends" get into.
On the environmental side of things, you should see the utter devastation and damage pot growers cause to the national forest in my county. Advanced erosion, human waste everywhere, stream and creek diversion and very inhospitable farmers who are known to kill hikers and whatnot when they happen onto their crop by accident. The same people who chain themselves to trees are destroying entire forests by supporting pot growers.
This may not be a popular answers, but that's my opinion on the subject.
