I just started hearing the moderately loud rattle, but what is puzzling me is that it seems to calm down on occassion, noticed while ideling. First thought it was just the power steering fluid low, it was not. Oil level fine. Water level fine, no overheating. No hesitation or miss. It is difficult to tell where it's from as the water pump and power steering and engine are all in the area of the noise. Also, it doesn't have a water pump whine that I'm familiar with.

If you've never changed your top engine mount (AKA Top Torque Axis Mount), that's probably what you need to do. Other things it could be (but are less likely) are timing chain or catalytic converter.

If your car sounds like a Diesel Engine, probably it's the Timing Chain. (This condition happens due to poor preventative maintenance, in particular - maintaining oil levels)

If it sounds like a hollow soda can, it may be your catalytic.

Timing chain is unlikely if you have maintained your oil levels throughout the life of your car. If your car is over 100K miles and you haven't changed the Engine Mount or the Catalytic, it is probably either of those. Another thing you may want to try is to run your car without the Serpentine Drive belt for a short time just to rule out whether it is Engine Noise or non-Engine Noise. If the rattle persists while the drive belt is removed, it's probably Engine Noise (which includes the engine mount and catalytic). If the rattle does not persist, it's probably something else (e.g. belt tensioner, water pump, power steering pump, etc...)

Good luck.

The 01 SC2 has a a million.9 litre engine geared up via Saturn. The 02 L sequence 4 cylinder engine is a 2.2 litre Ecotec. they don't look to be the comparable, and are probable to be puzzling to alter. there are probable a incredibly solid style of salvage yards and Ebay sellers who've right suits on your husband's motor vehicle, that's the simplest course to take.

sometimes water pumps rattle, but you could have a heat shield on your exaust pipe that is loose or it could also be your timing chain, if your vehicle has one, hope this helps.
