1) Access to water, both for consumption and transportation
2) By giving the city effective access to a hinterland and to markets beyond itself.
3) a) industrialization, b) electrication, c) wider range of services in the cities, d) reduced need for farm labor
4) Because industries located in the cities and required large labor forces
5) Jobs and modern amenities
6) Structural steel, fire-resistant construction techniques, elevators, telephones
7) Better sewerage and other public heatlh measures, electrical light and power, street cars, zoning regulations

1. A transportation means was necessary and a good source of water.
2. You have to be able to get food into a city and finished products out.
3. Railroads boomed during the Civil War and in the period right after (transcontinental railroad in 1868). Movement of people and goods got easy. Cities grew as jobs grew.
4. You needed a labor force. People flocked to where the jobs were.
5. Drought, harsh winters, and getting up to milk the cows at 5a.m.
6. The safety elevator and steel construction.
7. Stoplights, safety elevators, subways, and busses. Sprinkler systems and flush toilets.
