Also, by getting a routine physical, what all does that cover? Will hidden heart conditions, kidney problems, etc, show up through one?

you can call your county hospital and ask of they offer this service anywhere for free, which i doubt it but they may be able to tell you where you can have it done for less than a private dr.
But just for a one time physical at a clinic it sholdnt really cost like it would a private dr so you could check out clinics also- i wouldnt go to an er and lie and say something is wrong like someone said-maybe people do that but it will come back on you someday!! And furthermore you will still be responsible for the er bill anyway ins or not and it will a hell od alot more then you would pay for a physical at a dr office.
Some heart trouble may show up with the ekg they will do,, i doubt hidden ones you would need more extensive tests probably not kidney problems unless it is really bad they will find it in your urine.

It depends on what services your area has and your age. If your female 35 or older you will also need a mammogram. If male or female 40 or older you need an Ekg and 50 or older you will also need a colonoscopy males also need a lab test called a PSA. These are in addition to your basic physical and lab work. Now the important part where. If your in a large city your more fortunate to have access to health clinics that will work on a sliding scale. If your lower income this will cost you less. Start by checking on line for health clinics in your area. Ask them the cost of a complete physical with lab (CBC, CMP, Lipids, TSH & UA) You will need to be fasting (nothing to eat or drink for 8-12 hours before your lab draw in most cases. If your diabetic or have other medical conditions or are on medicine your lab work will be more extensive thus more costly. Some clinics will let you have your blood work drawn at a lab and /or arrange payments. Also ask while on the phone, if I pay the entire bill at the time of service is their a discount for cash paying. Some places will give you a 20% discount. I have recently heard of physicians that provide a service called a concierge service. This is where you pay a yearly fee for example $1200.00 (don't quote me on this it is just an example) and you receive all your medical care through that medical person for the year, specialist care would be separate. This might be something to check into if your an independant business owner and/or will need ongoing medical care. Good health to you.

Most doctors offices have a " flat rate" that they charge for the physical exam only. Most anything that would be done aside for just talking to the doctor would be an extra fee. If you have to have labs done ( which you sound like you need), those would be charged from the lab directly. That's when things get pricey. If the labs came back questionable, you would then be charged for any extra testing that needed to be done ( stress tests, EKG's etc). You would most likely be referred to a specialist for that type of thing which would drive your cost up even more.

It was suggested that you could go to any general/county hospital and get a " free" visit ( you would still be billed, by the way, but most hospitals understand that the " uninsured" usually end up not paying. Those bills can still be sent to collection, though.) the doctors would give you a thorough physical exam but their job is basically to get you " stable" and then refer you back to your family doctor. If you went in under a false symtom, chest pain, for example, they will surely hook you up to an EKG. If the EKG was abnormal, they would do what they needed to stablize you and then recommend you see a cardiologist....

If you are having some concerns about heart or kidney problems, though, it's worth the price to have the work ups done. If nothing else, you have peace of mind.

Good luck!
M.

Well, If you want to be a complete sleaze go to a County/City Emergency Room(they have to care for you...for free) with a fake complaint and they will usually do a routine physical if they find out you haven't had one in many many years. Say you have kidney or heart pain and they should help you.

Knowing a woman who works in a County Hospital many many people do this.

If you have no insurance you will have to pay the doctors regular visit price. Not sure if uncoveres heart conditions, etc.... but I know that you have to blow in this thing and if you are a smoker (like me) that is hard to do... it tells you how old your lungs are... most 25 - 30 year old smokers have lungs of a 55 - 65 year old!!!
