I am dating an American and we are trying to make a decision whether it would make more sense for him to move here (Canada) or for me to move to the states. It just seems like such a complicated process unless we get married and then there is no guarantee that either of us could actually stay in either country if we go through all the hoops that the government wants us to go through. How are we supposed to be together.

It's called immigration law. For some reason, people who want to come here cant seem to understand that we have laws and procedures to follow. People come here illegally and then complain that they are treated as criminals. Why are they treated as criminals? Because they ARE criminals until they comply with the law. Is that so tough to understand?

But I digress. I think it's great that you want to be together, but if you cant "go through the hoops" to do it, that's the way it goes. Especially with the commitment to control our borders nowadays. And seriously, if the key to this relationship is being together, and if it's easier to get here if you are married, why not get married? Or is that too big a hoop? Because US Immigration law was not designed for convenience of your relationship. I hate to sound cruel, but it's true.

Just as a side note...did you know that Mexico doesnt allow immigrants to work there? Hows that for gonads?

Immigration is always a complicated process, though it's a lot simpler between the US and Canada than many other places.

Marriage is an exception to the normal hurdles.
