Trust me on this. Looking like an idiot means nothing. Friends will forgive you and enemies will think it of you regardless. What you will regret most in life looking back is all the opportunities you didn't take. Trying and failing is ok. Every success requires many more failures (though preferably in practice). There are lots of real risks to avoid in life. This isn't one of them.
