The United States is home to many of the world's tallest skyscrapers. Here is a list of the country's 50 tallest buildings based on their official height.

Before the September 11, 2001 attacks, the twin towers of the World Trade Center occupied the second and third positions on the list below. Tower One (the North Tower) stood at 1,368 feet (417 m) and Tower Two was 1,362 feet (415 m) tall. The 1,776 foot (541 m) Freedom Tower, scheduled for construction on the former World Trade Center site (known as Ground Zero), was intended to become the tallest building in the United States upon its scheduled completion in 2010. The Chicago Spire (previously known as the Fordham Spire) a tower planned to be built in Chicago, Illinois is planned for completion in 2010. This tower would be taller than the proposed Freedom Tower with a height of 2,000 feet (610 m). The proposed Las Vegas Tower in Las Vegas, Nevada, if built, is scheduled to be completed by 2011 and will also be higher than the Freedom Tower with a height of 1,888 feet (575 m).

Other tall buildings under construction are the Signature Tower (condominiums) in Nashville, Tennessee (1,057 feet (322 m)) Comcast Center (975 feet (297 m)) in Philadelphia as well as Trump International Hotel and Tower (1,362 feet (415 m)) and Waterview Tower (1,047 feet (319 m)) in Chicago. If all these buildings are completed at the current projections, the nine tallest buildings in the United States would be located in either New York (3 - Freedom Tower, Empire State Building and Chrysler Building) or Chicago (6 - Fordham Spire, Sears Tower, Trump International, Aon Center, John Hancock Building and Waterview Tower) - excluding the proposed Signature Tower in Nashville, Tennessee.

The tallest actual building is currently the Sears Tower, though some radio towers are taller.

We might get some who quibble over the definition of "building". I believe the tallest office building in the US is still the Sears Tower in Chicago.

FWIW Sears no longer uses the building as their headquarters.
