While defending the size of his own home after attacking Gore et al for having mansions, Sean admitted he lives in a 6000+ sf home, but said "that's the average" for the US. I have not seen this to be the average in places I've lived, but maybe you have. Is it the average in your state? How big is your home?

Jessica4: He said it. I heard it. He said it was "average" to deflect the accusation that he lives in a large inefficient house.

According to the National Association of Home Builders, the average home size in the United States was 2,330 square feet in 2004, up from 1,400 square feet in 1970.
6000 square feet is WAY OUTSIDE the norm ...

It's possible he lied, but more likely he's confusing terms.
"Average" is also referred to as "arithmetic mean"; essentially, you add the sizes of all the homes that you wish to consider, then divide by however many homes there are.
"Median" is obtained by taking a list of the sizes of all the homes you wish to consider from lowest to highest, and choosing the middle value.
For example, consider the following homes: 1,900 sf, 2,000 sf, 2,200 sf, 2,500 sf, and 16,000 sf.
The "average" size of these homes is almost 5,000 sf; however, the "median" size of these homes is 2,200 sf. Quite a difference depending on the method and term you use.
6,000 sf may be an "average", but most people do not live in a home that is anywhere close to that size. Median values are much more accurate representations of the point that he probably meant to convey. Whether this error was an intentional lie or an honest mistake, I can't say.

No, the average size is somewhere between 2000 and 3000 square feet for a private home. Much less for an apartment or condo.

I would say that is a little high. I would like to see the data to back that up. Where I live, 6000 sqft home is an upscale home. The average home for a middle class family is 2000-3000.

Maybe it is the average size in his area. Or it could be the average size of a new build single family home. I have not heard that though. I would guess it is closer to 2000-2500 sq/ft

The average size for a middle class family is approx. 2,500 sf. A house of 6,000 sf is definitely a high class home.

That sounds rather large. Around here (out west), it's probably in the 2000+ range (which is the size of our home).

Gore is a hypocrite and Sean's statement is probably taken out of context. He would never say the "average" home is 6,000sf.
My home is 2500sf. You have many that are bigger but there are tons that are closer to 1000sf.

average around here is 2000 - 2500. Honestly I wouln't want to have to clean 6000 sq. ft of home all the time! Mine is 2200.
