Why do some of the periodic elements on the chart have 3 letters?

This is for a homework assignment. We have to find out why on the Periodic Table of Elements some of the elements have/did have 3 letters.. (ex. Unp, Unh, Uuu)

The UU refers to UnUn (the first two numbers in the atomic number) which attests to the lack of imagination in naming these elements.
