computer virus????

Question

i had one a couple of days ago and the only way i could get it out is erase all my files,pictures,music and yahoo messenger and etc etc. what is the best virus protecter?? how can i prevent this again from happening? thanks

and it sucks to have a virus it was like i just got my computer for the first time.

You may not like hearing this but you need much more that just an AntiVirus program.

You need:

Firewall. The Windows Firewall, as with any, is very good when used with AV and AS programs. I recommend you continue to use it. If you decide you want a different Firewall you can get some very good free firewall programs. Zone Alarm, Comodo, Sygate and other are very good.

AntiVirus program. Use only 1 AV program. For this I recommend Kaspersky. It is one of the very best that will detect and remove 99+% of viruses. AVG detects and removes in the low 80's%.

If you want a free AV program I recommend Active Virus Shield. It uses the Kaspersky AV program.

AntiSpyware program. Don't confuse with AV. They are completely different. You need at least three AS programs that provide Full time protection. Most free AS program do not provide full time protection. They only scan and remove when you direct it to do so. To get you started I recommend (all are free and provide full time protection):

Windows Defender. Updated through the Microsoft/Windows updates. If you have the Autoupdate working it is updated automatically.

Spybot Search and Destroy. One of the very best general AS programs available. This program must be udated manually by you. This is a small price to pay for a really good free AS program. For full time protection check the box for "Tea Timer" during the download and setup.

SpywareBlaster. This program works full time and monitors and blocks known malware before it gets on your computer.

AVG Free is the best anti-virus out there right now. Norton is total junk, uses up a lot of system resources and you have to pay for it. Avast is another free anti-virus, which is still good, but personally I like AVG. You can download AVG from the link below.

I've had best luck with AdAware by LAVASOFT. Run it every couple days and don't forget to update it.

Get rid of any p2p programs such as kazaa, limewire, bearshare... they are BAD NEWS unless you really know what you're doing, you WILL get viruses.

get avast. i have it and im always virus free. avg and northon suck. also to keep viruses out get a good firewall. try zonealarm.
its good and its free. also never use internet explorer. its like a door way for viruses, malware and adware. get firefox instead. get google toolbar to keep pop-ups away and after you have gotten firefox disable internet explorer. here is how:go to start menu and click all programs. then click on set program access and defaults. click on non-microsoft and then click ok.

AVG is the best "free" antivirus out there.. But NOD32 & Kaspersky are the best "commercial" packages out there.. (In my opinion)
