I would live in the North, industrial type places are where I belong. But if you are from a small town I'd probably stay and either work on a farm or own a farm of my own.

Most former slaves remained in the South in the years following the Civil War. However, not all--some emigrated to the North. But many who left went West. Check out the "Exodusters"--former slaves who moved to Kansas.
After 1900, and especially beginning in World War I, large numbers of African-Americans began to leave the South and move north, taking advantage of the job opportunities the war created. The military took many workers--and also cut off the flow of immigrants from Europe--thus opening the door to blacks to get work in factories in large numbers.

That's easy -- the North. The Civil War may have ended slavery but it only began a 100-year-long process of ending widespread discrimination against African Americans. The second American Revolution, the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s, ended once and for all that tragic chapter in our nation's history.

I don't know what I would have done but I do know what actually happened. Most blacks and many whites were entrapped in the "sharecrop" system, where most of what they had to live on was leftover corn (maize),
With the need for industrial labor during the Great War and especially WWII many of them emigrated north, into what were then great industrial cities.

I'd go west and steal some Indian land and to get away from most you you whiteys. Don't trust whitey - that's what my grand dad always said... or maybe that was in Steve Martin's movie the Jerk.
Whatever. I think for a black person in 1865 neither is a particularly good choice.
