I just got out all of my bills from my daughters birth. (I live in Wisconsin)
My delivery and room cost my insurance company (for 3 days) $5581.21. I payed out of pocket $380.40.
My anesthesia during delivery cost the insurance company $1190.00. I payed out of pocket $119.00
My daughters stay in the hospital cost the insurance company $2141.36. (this was a routine stay) I payed out of pocket $142.18
For my daughters peditrician visits in the hospital cost the insurance company $619.16. I payed out of pocket $32.00.
When its all said and done w/out insurance i would have roughly paid $9,500 for the delivery/hospital stay, and my daughters hospital stay.
With my insurance I only ended up paying roughly $700 for the delivery/hospital stay, and my daughters hospital stay.
Hope this helps

I just had a baby 7 weeks ago. Our insurance covered all our bills, but we received statements last week and the prices were all listed. I was floored. I had a vaginal delivery, an epidural ($925), an episiotomy ($300), stayed 36 hours in the hospital and my son had a circumcision ($375). Total, it all added up to just over $10,000. And that's without any complications, and doesn't include the bill from the pediatrician who came to the hospital to check him out.
I just got another statement, and it tacked on another $2000 for my son's stay those 36 hours and miscellaneous things.

Our bills (for a vaginal birth and a healthy baby) totalled $18,000. But we had insurance so we only had a $100 co-pay. Basically, you want to make sure you have good insurance coverage!
Homebirths are fine for some women. Just keep in mind, if you have an unexpected complication or need an emergency c-section you will have to take an ambulance to the nearest hospital!!

Unfortunately, there is no exact amount here. I know some people that didnt have complications at all and there bill was about $8k, then there are people like me who was induced, in labor for 32 hours, then still had to have an emergency c-section, my bill came to $46k!!! Thank God I had insurance. What you would want to do, since it seems you don't have insurance now, is to get insurance like medical or medi-caid (which is provided through the state you will be living in) and the birth would be paid for through that.

Not quite sure what a "normal" baby delivery is but I also got the hospital bill statements, even though I was insured. My son was a preemie and the bill totalled $50,000. WOW!

About $6,000 for two days in the hospital with no complications.
About 30% of babies in the US are born by C-section, a C-section costs about $25,000

Home-Birth is very reasonable indeed. There is hardly a costly tortuous instrument in sight. America has the BEST Professional Midwives in the World. You are in good hands with them. Have an enjoyable and unforgettable time in their company within your newly-found Shangri-la ! Stay cool and welcome !
Sorry ! I am not an American; I am simply passing by and will be leaving in the future. For your sake I had wished you had been welcomed warmly. However, as you can see for yourself, many Americans don't travel and evidently, are unaware that Airlines have rules for Flying Pregnant Ladies. In fact, you will realise that Americans are not only uninformed, misinformed, but, "disinformed". For example, you ask a precise question about natural Birth and one very truthful answer you received was that the person does not know what constitute a Natural Birth. Thank you for that bit of Truth. However, judging from the rest of the answers, it is clear that natural Births, taking place at home, is "only for some Women". You are aware, I am certain of just how expensive Giving Birth is in this country. (Pity indeed you are not going to Canada , as someone suggested!) Considering that Birth is exploited to a hilt, making it an important economic component, you have to take some serious precautions. Since you are from elsewhere, you may have no family and no trusted friends on whom to rely. If you wish to have a happy time while you are here, then think LONG-TERM. The "disinformation" Americans suffer, unbeknown on some level to them, start in Pregnancy. A Mother's natural guard is soon replaced by a lot of self-doubt through a series of laborious tests - just in case. " Just in case" is a wonderful weapon. I believe normal pregnancies are complicated by all sorts of UNNERVING tests and probes - why give a pregnant Woman an Anatomical scan when there is no need ? What is the Doctor looking for exactly when there are no abnormal symptoms? It doesn't matter -" just in case". As you know, we do not have this 'luxury' elsewhere, as European Governments would not tolerate unnecessary and superfluous expenses of this kind. After all, our tax-system takes care of all these "Rights' of ours, including Education. So it is wise of you to ascertain the "terrain" here. After your Baby is born, you will want to discover this very beautiful Country; you will NOT prefer spending your time AND your money at the Department of Pelvic Floor for re-education. Many American Women end up there because they were treated with harsh and invasive Methods. As you know Midwives are trained in "maneuvres" - they are trained and skilled to turn breached Babies around without using the barbaric method of inflicting a huge episiotomy and.. well...
In America, you have to keep with the Best and their best Methods. Question of Manner, Method and Means ( in the sense of "means to an end")are Americans' Achilles' Heel, unfortunately. When things go wrong here, it has to do with those aspects of doing things. So who are the Best ? I am only interested in FACTS because I would not be writing this, if the USA stood for the safest country in which to Give Birth. Where does it rank on the World's list for the rate of Maternal Deaths in Hospitals? I bet you, even Americans don't know - it's not their fault entirely, as there are very powerful financial concerns behind all this Human Sacrifice. If the US ranked within the first Five, there would be no real problem, but it doesn't. It is not even if the first Ten: it ranks Twenty-First AND falling, because, as a very well respected American Midwife points out: there is not "an impartial system of data-gathering, review, audit and analysis" as in England, for example (p279. Ina May's Guide to Childbirth). So, keep to the advice of the Dutch obstetrician G.J. Kloosterman:
" In no way can we improve pregnancy and labour in a healthy woman; we can change it, but never for the better."
I want to run with the Winners only, and so should you: The Farm Midwifery Center in Tennessee, over three decades, can be very proud of its achievements with 95 % Natural Births - and no, the Women who went to give Birth there, were no different than any other "potential complication" creature which arrives in Hospital, mostly and overwhelmingly, to be cut.
Good Luck ! Simplify things for yourself and it will be wonderful - This is America after all.
