I'm not sure I understand your question totally.

But, maybe this will help: There is a lot more genetic variation in chimpanzees than there is in humans. This suggests that at one time there was a very tiny human population from which we are all descended. Could this be the answer to your question? Humans and chimps share 98.5% of their genes, but within the chimp community there is more variation than in the human population.
