I dont see the problem. Its a heck of a lot faster than typing out the whole thing. Laughing out loud. Its not so much lingo its more like internet shorthand. I think its very handy personally.

I think it's fine when using an instant message program or even sending an informal email. Unfortunately, some people don't stop there. I've seen it in actual letters, school reports, and other things where it's not appropriate. Also, it does bother me when people use it all over the place. If they type something which is not at all funny, and then add "LOL" to it out of habit, it makes me want to ask them if that sentence honestly made them laugh out loud.

I use it sparingly. Like you, I usually type "ha ha" instead. Even then, I only use terms like that in very casual situations.

I have not been caught dead yet typing LOL. I'll just use the ha... heh... , or some other trick. I think LOL is just overused.

What I dislike even more is the "u" for "you",
"r" for "are",
"gr8" for "great"
"5n" for "fine"
"becuz" for "because".
and the little i being used instead of capitalized. I admit that most of make mistakes and typos on here, but not taking the effort to clean up and spell simple words out shows laziness and sloth.

Uh no. Once you're on the internet more than a week, you'll realize it just becomes second nature. Also, it doesn't necessarily mean that you're literally laughing out loud, its sometimes added after a comment so that the person you're talking to knows it was said in a joking fashion. We aren't speaking here, we're typing, things can often be mis interpreted.

LOL did not originate on the internet but on AOL before it became connnected to the internet. To old timers anyone who uses LOL is consider a lower class, non-technical user.

Doesn't bother me unless it's very obvious that something isn't funny enough to be LOLing. Since you can't see facial expressions LOL and other things kind of clue you in on the tone of the conversation.

No I really like the LOL. I think it's funny when people do that.

Nope, I do it all the time...sometimes I use it for it's literal meaning, but most times its used because I don't know what to say, or how to end off certain things. I know it sounds weird, but I only use it on msn.

most peope just use lol as something to say, like people say "uh" or "um" or "like" when they are talking. lol usually doesnt indicate laughing but is just there as a reply. have fun trying to get people to stop saying it though. its a habit.
