The difference being: A hug is a warm way to greet someone who is, or has been very close to you. As a friend, pal, old roommate or relative (even a distant relative).
A Bear-Hug is the biggie. When there are people with whom you have a really... really close kinship ( not just a relative) with, be it any of the aforementioned contacts, then your heart is filled with such gladness at their presence, that you just want to "hug 'em 2 death", so to speak. So you give them the biggest, tightest, closest most personal hug, as if to say I am making up for all the lost little hugs that we have missed during a certain time frame. As long as they don't give you a big ole sloppy kiss along with the bear-hug, then I would say, a welcomed bear-hug is probably the best tactil communication one can receive. Byll Butler

i woud have to say that hug is mainly between friends when you just hug and let go. A bear hug is like a really really tight hug. Like one you might give to a best friend that you haven't seen in a year.
Hope this helps!

A hug is a regular hug. A bear hug is an exaggerated hug where the person is all over you and hugging you tighter than normal.
