Join a chat group in an area of interest.
I for example am into Raw Food.
I have met fellow raw food types in my area through this community run bulletin and have expanded my raw friendship circle.
It is nice to share things in common with friends so look into a chat of interest.

I don't like meeting people on the internet - not only is it really impersonal, but it's dangerous too. Just make sure you be cautious when you try to make a new "friend." Go out and meet people you know are real, face to face! That way you won't be antisocial and glued to your computer all day!
