Is there a piece of hardware or DVD player that will read AVI files from a USB external hard drive and play them on my TV?

You can burn AVI files to a DVD or use the SVideo out or DVI out on your graphics card to you TV.

Howzit

1. Get a graphic card with TV out and connect to the TV. This will allow you to watch the movies on you big *** plasma.

2. Get a DVD and a DVD-RW. Get a program like Power Creator and burn the AVI's to the DVD and play them using you DVD Player connected to yo big mama TV

3. Buy yourself the latest DVD which supports USB connection. You simply plug in the USB storage which contains media files and it will play them...

4. Get your self an LCD or Plasma which DVI/AGP input which will act as your monitor...

What Chris mentioned would work fine.

If your computer is relatively close to your television, just connecting the PC to the television would probably be the easiest and most cost effective way.

Depending on what kind of tv you have, you can connect multiple ways. S-video works for most regular televisions. If you have an HDTV you can use DVI or VGA, sometimes you might need a DVI to HDMI converter if the TV is pretty much brand new.

There are other options, you can buy a media center extension for Windows XP Media Center edition. It is basically a box that works as a simple computer dedicated for videos, music and pictures. Xbox 360's have this capability.

Get a DVD player with the DivX logo on it. DivX codec reads AVI files. And then burn your files to disk and watch away.
