There was no war of pearl harbor. The Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor, which was basically the trigger that caused the U.S. to become involved with Allies in World War 2.
World War 2 pitted the US, and European Allies (Russia too) against Germany and Japan.
The fighting had been going on for a long time when the Japanese decided to strike us hard at Pear Harbor. They did this in order to scare us into not joining the alliance.
Instead it made us angry. We fought back and eventually dropped the only wartime nuclear bombs ever used. The two bombs were dropped on the cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. This ended the fight with Japan. (One nuclear bomb was not enough to convince them)
We then sent our troops to Europe. Normandy and DDay occured. Germany was hurt bad when they tried to invade Russia in the winter. Eventually the Allied troops overcame German resistance. As we reached Hitler, he killed himself and the allies ended up victorious.

The other posts are correct that war is not the proper term. The Battle of Pearl Harbor. But I do disagree with the ones who say the Japanese won the battle.
The battle was a surprise attack, though it was intended to strike after an official announcement of hostilities were presented in Washington D.C. Through miscommunication and deliberate delays by the state department, the declaration was delivered well after the attacks. Next, Pearl Harbor one just one phase of the total attack, Allied forces in many locations in the Pacific were also attacked.
The plan for the attack on Pearl Harbor was to take out the air power - successful. Take out the Battleships - also successful. Take out the Carriers - Failure (none were in port at the time). Take out the fuel centers - Failure (the last wave was never launched). There was also a goal of rendering Pearl Harbor incapacitated for military use. This was also a failure. No ships were sunk that blocked the harbor nor were the drydocks knocked out of commission.
So while the Japanese definately killed a bunch of major ships, they missed out on the ones that they really needed to get and Pearl Harbor remained the major American military base in the Pacific. Another note, the destroyer fleet and the submarine fleet both remained intact. Bother were instrumental in destroying Japan's military might. Especially the submarines. Many historians have contemplated that if the Japanese had hit the fuel depot and submarine pens, then Japan would have had a free hand in the Pacific, something they lost in June of 1942.
I would recommend reading books, such as At Dawn We Slept, by Gordon Prange as a good starting place. Though read more than just his works as there are many different opinions.

The Japanese won the BATTLE of Pearl Harbor. Pearl Harbor was a single battle in the pacific Theater of World War Two. The battle was the air attack on are Naval Base in Hawaii. The Japanese sent planes from six of their aircraft carrier. Six battleships of the United States Pacific Fleet were sunk. The most famous was USS Arizona (The one with the memorial and that was used in the movie, Here comes the Navy) The ship took a bomb hit not down the smokestack but through the deck and blown up a power magazine. The Arizona was one of two battleships that were not salvageable including the Oklahoma. Also over 100 planes destroyed and the death of 2,500 men. Also the Allies, including America won WWII. Main Goal of the Attack: Damage the Pacific Fleet that they are unable to mount a serious attack against Japanese Offenses in the Dutch East Indies. We know that the carriers were not destroyed and the harbor was not put out of commission. Also the destroyers are outdated and laking in number, Subs were short-range and need bases to get to an area where they can reach the Japanese Cargo Ships also the lose of ships in the pacific fleet makes most defense plans of the US in the Pacific (Plan Orange) were useless. In the Tactical and Strategical area, the Japs won. Scott, by your standards, no one won a battle in WWII.

Japan attacked and destroyed much of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii in the US on December 7, 1945 from the air. However, Japan did not occupy Pearl Harbor. That was the primary involvement of Pearl Harbor in fighting in World War II.

Stockoslayers got the best answer so far so I will not repeat everything he said in my own answer.
So far nearly everyones answer is correct to some degree so whats with the extraordinary amount of thumbs down?
Stocko's answer is nothing but fact yet he has 4 thumbs down!?!?
only fault I can find with his answer is the reason he stated they attacked us in the first place, and even that is mostly just semantics. They did not attack us to keep us from joining the allies. they knew we would eventually join no matter what.
They attacked our fleet at Pearl to hurt us so bad that by the time we recovered from it, they (the Japanese) would be so firmly entrenched in Asia that we would be unable to do anything about it.
FACT: Pearl Harbor was a Battle NOT a war in itself
FACT: THe Battle of Pearl Harbor was the opening battle for the US and the Reason we joined the war
FACT: Japan won the battle at Pearl but missed several vital targets that ultimately proved fatal to them. They missed the Carriers. They Missed the vital Fuel Storage Depots. and they Missed the Submarines
FACT: thogh they won the opening battle , They Japanese lost the war having unconditionally Surrendered in 1945 abaord USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay.
Lets see how many thumbs down I get from idiots for these undisputed facts of history.
If it goes to a vote. Stocko, you got my vote for Best answer.

Pearl Harbor was a so to speak battle. It was actually the sneak attack by the Japs, while their officials were in Washington to discuss issues, which included the war in Europe. The Japs. caught the US completely off guard and just about wiped out our Pacific fleet, excluding our carriers which were out of the harbor at the time of the attack. It was primarily an air attack, although our troops did snare two mini subs patroling in and around the harbor. It was a tragic start to the war with Japan, but it woke America up and enabled our country to unite as it had never been before. So, the Japs won the battle, but our country would the war and strengthened our nations military to the height it had never had before.

There was a suprise attack on Pearl Harbor by the Japanese. They destroyed much of America's Pacific Ocean fleet in the process. This prompted America to declare war on Japan and then Germany to declare war on us since Germany and Japan were allies. It took 4 long years, but AMERICA won the war. There was no war of pearl harbor unless you choose to call World War II the war of pearl harbor.

There wasn't a war of pearl harbor. The Japanese launched a surprise attack on the american naval station there, and destroyed like twenty ships (and killed 5000 sailors i believe). Now, AFTER the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor President Roosevelt declared war on Japan, and the U.S. entered World War Two.
But I guess the Japanese won the battle of Pearl Harbor, if you could call it that.

First, it was the battle of Pearl Harbor, there was no war. Make sure you keep these ideas separate.
Secondly, since there was tremendous loss of life on the part of the Americans and very little loss on the part of the Japanese, and the damage done to the American fleet was significant, while the damage caused to the Japanese fleet and air force was minimal, one would have to say that the Japanese won.
However, thirdly, one could argue that the entire attack on the USA was a mistake and a miscalculation of the part of the Japanese. The end result of this one battle was the battle for the Pacific which the Japanese lost, and it ultimately led to the fire bombing of Tokyo and the dropping of the two atomic bombs. If one looks at this broader picture one might argue that ultimately the Japanese lost.
It's all a matter of perspective.
