I just bought a brand new game, it worked for like two days and now all of the sudden the disc won't read at all. I didn't do anything outside of the system that would cause a scratch, and I think it is the system that is scratching the game. Has anyone encountered this before?

Yes actually I was having the same problem. I had an older version of PS2 (the very big and bulky ones), and I just got a new game. The first day after I got it, it got scratched up. So I took it to the store where I got it from and traded it in for another one. When I played the one I just recieved, it got a huge scratch in it too. Then, my playstation wouldn't read the discs at all. The problem was the Playstation. I had to throw the console away, and I got a new, slimmer version of PS2.

I think it may have something to do with the version of the PS2, possibly from age. I would reccomend throwing away the PS2 you have now, and getting a new one. Go to a store like Blockbuster, and get the CD resurfaced, just to be sure. Test other games on the playstation also. You could take it in to a gaming shop to look to see if the console is broken (it sounds like it is).

Have you ever dropped it? Have you ever hit it very hard? Is it making odd noises when you turn it on or is it very loud? If you've done any of this, then it's time to get a new Playstation.

Hope I helped =)

Look at your disc. Are there scratches on it? Even though the PS2 says it can't read the disc, that doesn't mean there is something wrong with the disc. PS2s are notorisly known for having the optical laser reader going bust. If your other games wont read either this is most likely the problem (its happened to millions of other ps2 players including myself). Depending on how old your ps2 is, you might be able to get it fixed. Hope this helps.

I would clean the tray where the disc sits with a q-tip and some rubbing alcohol. Normally it shouldn't be getting scratched from the ps2. If you have the receipt, try to exchange the game for a new one.

I saw somewhere in an ad that there's a disc cover where you can cover a disc that it wouldn't get scratched. Have you've tried looking at best buy or maybe Target?

yeah, there is a way to realign the laser. I have done this before, it could be a little difficult but it works. The only problem is once you open up your ps2 the warranty is void. You can use the instructions here: http://arstechnica.com/articles/paedia/hardware/ps2.ars

This did wonders for my ps2, and i still realign every 3 months because the laser gets disaligned.

Make sure there isn't a foriegn object in the ps2, that is sticking up, and you should clean your disk. Sometimes it gets dusty (the disc or the Ps2) and you need to blow it off. If its the disk, just blow it off and wipe it with your shirt, if its the ps2, get a blow duster (get at store) and blow the dust away.
