Great question. I am pro-choice, but I believe both sides need to help educate people and make available contraceptives to radically reduce the amount of abortions. And you will probably have more people on my side of the political spectrum agree...because the right really doesn't care about prevention nor do they care about life; its all about control over women's bodies nothing more nothing less.

Programs to help single mothers are needed, much more than there are available now. When I look at other country's' policies of mandatory childcare at many corporations for it's employees, I often wonder, as the richest country in the world, why we cannot offer this small but priceless amenity to our female citizens? We seem to have 15 million A DAY to send to help a country the size of New Jersey kill stone throwing youths, but not a penny for working moms. I do feel that some women that choose to have abortions do so out of financial turmoil. Although I do not agree with it, I can see where they are coming from. I once worked for a large financial firm that had as amenities for it's employees a virtual golf green, a top of the line gym and no childcare facility. Go figure. Some of the partners would easily give time off for a gold outing to the employees, but God forbid a female employee had to leave early for a sick son/daughter. The double standard is sickening. OK, rant over.

I remember when financial support was first given single mothers. It just create a cult of illegitimacy--with cases soaring.
I also remember when Roe v Wade was passed. There was a social worker I knew who pushed it and was sure there would be the end of unwanted and abused children.
Big joke huh? I think people have just become promiscuous and self centered with a lot less regard for human life. Did you know that Roe herself come to regret her lawsuit? She later met the child she was forced to carry to term as an adult ,and said having aborted that child would have been the biggest travesty in her life.
Throwing money at a problem doesn't work. A lot of us who fought for a lot of the social programs, which were implemented, see all of the negative results and sincerely regret our involvement.
People need to regard sex as something sacred and an adult activity, in which they personally are responsible for the outcomes. We have only made it where the youth can be more irresponsible and avoid the consequence of their behavior.
I do not see a man or woman as an adult until they are captain of their own soul: they can support themselves and any offspring without any handouts.
Look at the mess sex education turned into, with school handing out condoms, arranging abortions, encouraging homosexuality, etc. I really think parents can or maybe even should sue the schools for contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
What about feminism? I thought I would give women more rights and men would become more moral. Women have become more immoral and they still get worse jobs, with less pay. But men still expect women to sleep their way to the top. And women comply, but they don't have a guilty conscience any more. This is progress?
I worked very hard to try and make the world a better place but feel that I was a failure, just another Juan Quixote, tilting at windmills.

So MoltarRocks...you wanna throw the baby (so to speak) out with the bath water.
You know, Planned Parenthood, provides other things besides abortions. Prenatal care, birth control, STD prevention education to name a few.
Pach...The morning after pill is another thing that pro lifers want to get rid of by the way. They deem it the same as an abortion.
Basically, they want everyone to deny that we are all sexual beings and that we have *gasp* sex!

abortion is murder i think if women can be educated and given help and resources before they chose to murder there own baby then it would be successful
it it saves one life it's worth it
and so many people would be willing to raise the little human beings so they are not "unwanted"
it should be illegal and i agree people should try to stop it on legal and political grounds but all bases should be covered
and i would take in the baby I'm 16 think of how that would screw up my life but i would do it because i value human life and i believe no one should be murdered no matter how small
people get pregnant from having sex and most of the time (98% is the actual statistic) people chose to have sex .
why should a Innocent child die because some one didn't use protection

What I don't understand is why abortion is still a problem.
From my understanding, there is a "day after" pill women can take which is extremely effective against contraception.
Why don't we just make these freely available so that no woman has the excuse that she accidentally got pregnant? Also it would save a lot of guys who made it clear they do not want to get married, but get entrapped by an unscrupulous girl who purposely gets pregnant.

Great post. Unfortunately, I'm afraid your wonderful suggestion will fall on deaf ears or blind eyes since it is a written idea. They don't care about educating people unless it is to the drumbeat of their religious dogma and idea of how women should behave according to their narrowminded ideas and belief system. There are already clinics out there to provide birth control. Including the morning after pill which has nothing to do with abortion. It's called Planned ParentHood. But these extremists are so stupid that they believe every Planned Parenthood provides abortions when in fact not all of them do. Most of them just refer their patients to doctor's clinics that do perform abortions. And, there are organizations that can help a young single mother adjust and get classes on how to take care of their child. Alot of hospitals provide that service. However, these anti-choice extremists want you to behave their way and their way only. They want you to remain chaste and pure before you get married. They live in a 1950's fantasy bubble. They are so arrogant that they believe they are the only ones with the correct answers. It's no wonder more and more people are sick of these dogmatic sickos.

Pretty much, but which is why I'm campaigning for the Title X legislative revisions. That would end Federal funding of Planned Parenthood and their ilk.
Additionally, parental notification laws need to be passed. In CA, one was narrowly defeated last November. God forbid a parent gets to talk to their teen rather than have them whisked away under their noses.
In my city, there's a great Pregnancy Center, which helps women who would like to consider abortion alternatives. That's a big plus.
As for abstinence, the availability of on demand abortions and the 'next day pill' make it too easy to 'clean up afterwards'.

I'm pro-choice, but they *do* have the *right* to protest.
I think abortion protests are about as useful as war protests.
BUT - I will ask you the same question I ask abortion protesters. How many unwanted children have *you* adopted?
I think we need to drop the BS about having children being a "right". It is a privilege and should be treated accordingly.
