As far as I know, this movie and the movies "Psycho" and "Silence of the Lambs" were based on the real life crimes of Ed Gein. Look him up! His crimes were terrible.

I was there at the time. Ed Gein was a sad, lonely guy, whom no one suspected of anything worse than being sad and lonely.
As it turned out, he was also a graverobber who turned his finds into trophies. He may also have been a murderer, though I'm not quite sure on the issue. Anyhow, he died in a Wisconsin hospital for the criminally insane.
Various films, including Hitchcock's Psycho and the real Texas Chainsaw Massacre, were inspired by him, but none was based on actual fact.

It is based on a true story, but not a true story. The real leather face was more like Buffalo Bill from silents of the lambs. Both characters are based on the same person. But most of the story is BS.
