She is 4 months old and I have been giving her soild foods for 4 weeks now, but think that she needs a little more than just veg and fruit. She eats 3 ice cube tray size blocks of food twice a day(10.30am and 5.30pm - potato, carrot, apple, pear, sweet potato, swede etc...) sometimes mixed with rice to make it a bit more, then she still drinks a full bottle of formula milk too! 3 hours is the longest she can go before needing her next feed. She is also showing no signs of cutting back on any of her milk feeds or quantites! She still drinks a minimum of 850ml of formula milk per day, and it is the milk for hungrier babies! Will a little chicken or beef mixed with veg help? I know what the medical professionals say about not weaning before 6 months, but I would like to hear from the mums out there who know better! Thanks!

You must talk to your doc first.
I personally still not giving any meat or fish to my 7 months old daughter. She's still on veges &fruits, baby cereal and rice. Milk is still the main source of all baby's nutritional needs till 1 year. So if she's still hungry just give her more milk. Pureed meat & fish can be introduced from 6 months. As a mum myself I'm very careful about everything if proffesionals adviced to wait untill 6 months then it's for reason. What's the rush? There're so much rubbish in the meat nowadays I don't feel safe to eat myself. Fish probably a bit safer but I would still wait. What're you doing to her digestive system? Have you thought about that? (I'm just giving you point to think about not judging) At the end of the day it's about your baby's well being not about your peace of mind. Maybe it's stressful and hard at the moment but trust me they all grow out of it quick. Be patient and carry on offering her milk. We're all been there.
Best wishes

That debate has been ongoing and in continual flux for I don't know HOW long. I've known of infants who had no problem with it and others that couldn't digest light meats until they were at least 8 months old. It seems that every 5 - 10 years there are new findings here and there that contradict the old stuff, introduce new and then it's back to the old again. Whatever you feed your infants should have the recommended nutritional content for her age. Whether it comes in the the form of meat protiens or some other form of protein is up to you. Infants are not as defenseless as we are sometimes led to believe. They will let you know what they can absorb and what the can't. But first and foremost, discuss with your pediatrician FIRST. Yahoo Q&A has it's pros ... and cons.

You really should not introduce meats just yet. My pediatrician gave me the ok around 6-7 months, and she said that babies do not need alot of protein. She told me to buy the baby food that has the meat and veggies mixed so that my baby was only getting a small amount of the meat. If you are going to puree your own, you need to check with the pediatrician how much (in teaspoons) to mix with the veggies. Everything else you're giving her sounds ok though, just be sure that she is still getting the amount of formula she needs and that that solids aren't taking up all the room. Good luck!!

OK, loads of views above. You will have to make your own mind up! i can however recommend a wonderful book by Annabel Carmel recipe books for baby and toddlers. You mention ice cube portions, so I presume you are making your baby's food yourself(good on you). She has marvellous highly nutritional recipes... my kids all loved them, and because of the variety.... are all great eaters now. One tip though... don't puree everything perfectly smooth any longer than 6 months... or they reject the "rougher" textures (I made that mistake with baby number 1).
Personally I would avoid meat until at least 6 months as well as wheat based products.

Good luck

I'm not a mother but i work with children aged 3 months and help wean lots of children. all children are different and I've seen lots of children start solids at 3 months adding meet to the food will be fine as long as it is cooked correct and cooled before it is frozen. as for people knowing better you no your own child the best and if she wants food and milk give her it. you will prob find she will not cut down on her milk for a while yet. good luck

She doesn't need meat, but it won't hurt her. She gets enough iron now from her formula. A lot of babies don't like the grainy texture of pureed meats, but if she likes it, go ahead. Try feeding her three meals a day also, and try to always include a little food containing fiber in each meal, like sweet potatoes. Fiber will help her stay full-feeling longer. good luck!

You are not supposed to introduce solid foods before 6 months. At that, they are supposed to be on baby cereals.

I nursed with one for 11 months and the other for 2 years. My milk supply kept up as the demand went up.

Dont introduce meats yet as they are difficult to digest. Try the baby cereals first. Meat is not a neccesity, especially if you are nursing. If its protien you are worried about then broth would do it. Talk to a certified nutritionist.

I put my first on to cows milk at 11 1/2 months thinking should could handle it. I was very wrong. Babies systems are very different then ours.

If you are seriously considering meat for your baby stock up on enemas and learn how to disempact a baby. Not fun stuff!

That's a lot...you should be only feeding the cereals at 4 months old. Rice, oat, then wheat...then introduce veggies at about 5- 6 months then fruit after that...proteins aren't needed till they are about 7-8 months old
