It was basically a union issue, for higher wages and better working conditions, at least on the surface. Underneath, however, there are those who have suggested it was motivated either by anarchist or communists. If that is indeed the case then the cause is somewhat broader, including an effort to give total control of manufacturing to the people involved in the factories, not to an elite of managers and owners.
