I've got a soltek Motherboard that's currently running a standard AMD Athlon 1400 CPU. Ive just bought an Athlon XP 2100+ but I cant get it to work. Ive checked all the dip switch settings on the MB, ive updated the BIOS, still no luck. The CPU definitely works as ive tried it in my mates PC. My computer wont even boot up with the 2100+ in!!! When I put the 1400 back in, works fine. Any advice?

goto the maker's site and recheck the specs/manual/bios/etc of the motherboard. It might have a cpu compatibility list of what it can and cannot handle.

As one of the answers above said, check the compatibility list on the motherboard manufacturer's website. There may be a BIOS upgrade available to add compatibility for the XP 2100+.

if i'm to hazard a guess, i would say it could lie in the RAM. the socket compatibility is the same, 462, so it should work. However, i think the bus speed for memory on the 1400 would be about half of the 2100 so check that your ram is fast enough for the 2100. i.e if your ram is old (open up your pc and check the ram to see if it does actually say PC-133), buy some newer ram which is DDR 266mhz. 266mhz is the speed for the 2100 i think. that don't work, either get a computer repairs shop to take a look or get rid.

I think that Athlon 1400 MHz and XP 2100+ use different core voltages (1.75V and 1.6V?).

These CPUs get so hot so quickly. If you didn't install the cooling fan and smeared thermal paste on it, it may have over heated and burned out.

BTW, thermal paste should be replaced about one a year or so as it cracks and dries up. When it does, it doesn't transfer the heat efficiently and the CPU has to slow down to keep from over heating. When it slows down your computer slows down.

have you replaced the thermal paste on the underside of the fan? does the comp make a beeping noise as soon as you turn it on and then shut itself off.?. no thermal paste the comp will turn itself off. it costs 2:50 from maplins, just smear it on the underside of the cpu fan and see the difference. if youve applied thermal paste already your cpu is a dead duck.
