As a Moderate Independent, I have said it takes two to tango the whole time. Congress and the White House both did this to us, nationally.
Zooming the picture out, globally, the US and Iraq have been at this dance since 1979, when Saddam came to power, and recognized the Shah. He killed some Kurds, and a few members of his country's legislative body, then went to war with Iran. Nothing was resolved, and he then proceeded to kill somemore Kurds, we got upset, but he decided since he was massively in the hole for 80 billion dollars, that seizing Kuwait would be the key to reviving Iraq's economy. We knocked him silly, the Shiites revolted, but were backstabbed by us, when we didn't back them up, as we said we would. Suddenly aware of what was going on, Saddam killed some shiites to re-assert his rule, and he began posturing to make himself seem like he had something which he indeed did not.
Being suckered as we were, Bush, sr, Clinton, and finally Bush, Jr, all said he had WMD's, which if he did, we will never know, but, we can expect it was a ruse, to make us look like cads, when we finally searched and found nothing. This implies it was a plan, and I am beginning to believe it was. The plan didn't go as he planned, nor did ours go the way we expected. There was no sudden uprising against the US and her allies by the Arab League, to Saddam's chagrine. And, to ours, the old rivalries and rifts that fear had sealed up, became suddenly reopened by the liberty to speak and feel freely. This led to our insurgency problem.
So, like it or not, anyone can see, we are embroiled in something the British were all too willing to let fall as it may, when they partitioned the Asia Minor into seperate nations, and proceeded to pull out.
