I bought this car 3 w ago. It was a used one. It is an 05 Chevy Cobalt. All of a sudden it didnt start today but after putting it into N it started. It is working perfect now. Should I worry? Does it mean there is a prob about my gears?

It has nothing to do with the gears. It has to do with the neutral safety switch (sometimes called an interrupter switch)
Continue to pay attention to this issue. If it continues, or gets worse, replace the PRNDL switch at the transmission. It is mounted outside, and doesn't require all that much effort or skill.

Happy Motoring

This is not normal. there is some loose connection or something else wrong with the electronic system around the gear. get it checked.

You can also try clearing the error codes from the car computer. Just unplug the battary wire and put it back after 5 minutes it should reset the car computer. try again if it works.

I have had this problem before, sometimes the gear stick may be engaged but not fully engaged in order to activate the micro switch which activates the starter inertia switch. It may happen again but may just be a case of pushing the stick a little further forward next time.

No your doing great! Or your friend did. Newer cars are not supposed to start in the neutral position. It is part of your theft deterrent system. It will lock the starter if it is out of gear same as if someone tries to hot wire it.

Congratulations on your new car...

The neutral interlock switch needs adjusting or replacing, and Christi needs to read the question again.

Safety neutral switch.....it will need to be replaced.

it mounts on the exterior of the transmission and has a pigtail wire connector on it.

sounds like your neutral safety switch is out.its normally found on top of the steering wheel housing about a foot or so from your brake pedal
