The Yankees were owned by CBS before Steinbrenner bought them. CBS bought the Yankees and Fender Guitars, and ruined both of them. When you look for a Fender Guitar, you actually look for "Pre-CBS" ones. Same for the Yankees. They were great before when a group led by Dan Topping, developer Del Webb and Larry McPhail owned them, and became great again with Steinbrenner.

CBS. Mystic and Todeemo both gave very insightful answers. If my memory serves CBS bought the Yankees from the previous owners Dan Topping and Del Web for a grand total of $2 million which of course now would hardly buy you a decent backup infielder.
