(The Economist, Feb 3rd)
"You've never had it so good
A 14 page special report on Britain"

I waited months for that report, and found that although a lot of people are not doing well, on the whole Britain has never been better. Inequality is terrible, I don't know if worse than the tories got it. I don't think New Labour have put hundreds of thousands out of their home, like the thatcher government.

So why is there no good publicity for them? The article had a lot of praise. Is the popular press all conspiring in favour of Thatcher and the tories? Blair has kept in power under nothing but criticism and biased news presenters. I don't really like him but Thatcher's reign wasn't as credible.

Both the first two are criticisms rather than answers. Ignored my question.

Their biggest problem has been lying. If you don't tell the truth, then people will never believe anything you say. The economy in some aspects has done well because the global trend has been that way. It isn't down to Gordon Brown. If you look at things he could actually control, it is nothing but waste and corruption. Most of the so-called boom has been fueled by dodgy debt and funny money flooding into the City from the most corrupt people of the world (the Russians for example). It is a house of cards proped up by BS. And it will come down.

Thatcher did terrible things to the UK but she made no secret of her intentions.

Blair has given us over 200 new kinds of taxes to pay. He gave us (or allowed to happen) 1 surveillance camera for every 14 people in the country. We have the most intrusive data systems and personal security from violence is almost zero.

Socially the UK has taken a dive. Its really not a nice place to live in. Not all Blairs fault of course but he did little to lift the country up.

I don't live there anymore but I do visit regularly. Would I go back? no.

Thatcher had to turn round a basket-case economy and unionised industrial base. It was a seriously major achievement and yes, it caused a lot of pain. All Blair has had to do is keep things on an even keel - he hasn't actually changed all that much when you think about it - certainly nothing fundamental. To me, this is vindication of the Thatcher reforms.

There is very little goods in any of the media.
People appear, in general, to like bad news, sex, violence etc
If people would buy a good news paper I'm sure that there would be one.
- and Labour do seem very good at scoring own goals!

if you were to sum up Blair's run in power, you'd have to say that at least he let those who earned the money, keep the money, unlike the last labour government, who taxed high earners at 90% and they all moved abroad, unfortunately I'm not one of them !! He has tried to breath life into the NHS, but failed miserably along with other policies. The Conservatives lost the plot after Maggie forced in the poll tax, If you compare the performance's of both of them, it seems they have both ended up losing the plot.
