Well did you know the original statue of liberty was supposed to be a woman with shackles to show the atrocity of slavery? That's what I heard. I saw the copy in a museum here in New York--I see a lot of exhibits, but I believe it is at the Museum of City of New York. Do a google image search to see if you can find a picture.
Aha, here is a site that says a little about this statue and who the model was:

Another good site:

Hillary 2008! I won't for Obama in November if Hillary loses. McCain isn't that undesirable while in comparison with Bush. he's a warfare hero and knows what the troops are dealing with. he's likewise a lot smarter than Bush. I nevertheless might vote for the value tag if Hillary is vice president, yet she could truly be on authentic. i myself do unlike Barrack Hussein Obama. The funniest element approximately this total mess is that Ron Paul has by means of a few distance the ultimate concepts.

Various sources cite different models for the face of the statue. One indicated the then-recently widowed Isabella Eugenie Boyer, the wife of Isaac Singer, the sewing-machine industrialist.
Another source believed that the "stern face" belonged to Bartholdi's mother, Charlotte Bartholdi (1801-1891), with whom he was very close. National Geographic magazine also pointed to his mother, noting that Bartholdi never denied nor explained the resemblance.

She's nobody. Well, technically, she was probably modeled on someone, but just a paid model. Bartholdi simply personified Liberty in the form of a woman bearing a torch, which had a long tradition in France.

I believe the sculptor's wife was the model. I saw it on a PBS special, which you might be able to find on video at your local library. Was his name... Bartholi? Bartholdi?

Don't quote me on this, but to the best of my knowledge it was the mother of the sculptor who I believe was Mr. Eiffel who designed the Eiffel Tower

It was Gustave Eiffel's neighbor's mother, Mrs Liberty, hence the name.
