I've just bought a 1998 S Reg (No smart **** remarks!) the engine temperature gauge hardly moves from the cold/cool position. The engine is getting warn as the interior heating is working fine. Any (useful) advice please?

The heat will work and the engine feel hot at 160 degrees or so, but the engine should be running at 210. If the coolant isn't so low that it's below the sensor, then it's probably a bad sensor or leaky thermostat.

i am sure this is correct if you put the live wire from the sensor to earth then the needle should go all the way up to red,if this happens then the guage is fine and a faulty sensor would seem to be the trouble,not expensive to replace even from ford's or other car shop's.DO NOT HOLD THE WIRE TO LONG TO EARTH JUST LONG ENOUGH TO CHECK NEEDLE GOES TO RED.

You can go to various places to have sensors checked for free like Auto Zone. Car shops do it too but charge for the service. After you have it tested, go from there.
