A friend of mine says that the quality and sound of your voice, and whether or not you can sing well is something that is genetically determined. Do you think that this is true?

Partially.. there are some people who sing and have natural talent, and there are others that are trained. You can usually tell them apart.

it helps (or can hurt) but you can take classes to improve your voice, singing ability, breathing etc.

why do you think we have mandatory music class in grade school?

I think so. Either you can sing or you can't. It can't be taught.

If someone has a rough talent, they can be taught how to improve it...but if you can't sing, you can't sing.

No, my parents are horrible singers but I am pretty good (as weird strangers on the street said... NYC)!
