If you want to dress elegant/casual, your shoes and socks should always go with your pants. Unless you are a woman with sparkly heels, or a homie with $200 Air Jordans (or whatever the hot sneakers are now), you don't want to call attention to your feet!

Brown shoes & socks go with brown/beige and green pants (Don't wear green pants unless you are an 0ver-60 golfer!). Black shoes & socks go with black/grey or blue pants.

Elegant/non-casual: Go with black/gray/navy combinations. A black shirt doesn't really work well with brown pants, but goes great with any shade of gray pants.

Hope this helps.

I'm a big fan of tying colors together from different area of your body, so I'd go with black shoes, depending on accessories. Mostly I'd try not to end up with all black below your waist and all brown above it, as that tends to draw attention to the color variation. However, if you're also wearing black earrings or a black hat or something black up top, black shoes are fine.

I would wear a brown shoe. My mother always used to tell me your shoes should always match you bottom hem line.

I of course always break this rule unless wearing a dress.
