Great question. If it were me (with my wife) I'd at the very least quit my campaign aspirations, and if necessary, resign from office.

John Edwards retired from the Senate in 2004. No need from him to step down from office.

ok i have 2 answers for this. the first one is to yours. if she was going to die soon, then yes i probably would. however, her condition does not mean she will die soon. with the correct treatment, she could live for years and years. so are you seriously proposing he should resign to solitude with his wife, to wait for possible years for her to die? would you want to totally give up your life so you can just sit and home and wait for a loved one to die, especially if that disease could take 10 years to kill them? thats a little obsurd. besides, he will step down if she gets worse, i guarantee.
secondly, to all the people that say he will use this as a political tool, shame on you. john edwards simply is not that type of man. count how many times he brings up her sickness during his campaign.

They can treat the cancer and she has a very good expectation. It is now a political tool. He will now of course be able to play the sympathy card. That may sound crass but I'm not the one that is doing it He is.

I don't know, as I am not him. When my brother broke his neck and was in the hospital, the first month we didn';t know what the outcome would be, neither do we still know every time he goes back in. I haven't quit my job, I finished school, I carried on with life, because you have to. i took one week off. My brother would have lost a lot of hope if people stood around assuming he would die. But I speak for myself, and that is all you can do as well. At least he didn't leave her in the hospital for another woman, like Rush did. I am saying this because you posted this in politics.

He also lost a son to a car accident. His son's dream was for him to become president. It's a tough one to call. He should spend time with his wife but I don't think that she wants him to quit. It's still early on in the campaign process so I guess that will have to be a personal family choice between them.

I would discuss the situation with my spouse and respect the decision we BOTH made.
Many sick people do NOT want the constant sympathies that tend to naturally come with being sick!
My mother-in-law had a heart condition (destroyed valves) but she did NOT want people doing things for her. She wanted to live her life (the rest of it) within her abilities.
She did not want to be singled out by her sickness!

His wife asked him to put it first. Some people with illness need to fight it by living the life they would have lived had they not had it. Elizabeth Edwards is one of them, and the two of them believe that they are doing the right thing.
After all, it is her right to choose her life )and possible death) not yours.

It is their decision. They made it. I personally wouldn't do it. But then again, even under the best of circumstances, I wouldn't run for President either. You're offended? Why? Were you involved in it somehow?

Well, he's going on because she apparently wants him to. But in his shoes, I would have to throw in the towel and spend every waking minute with the wife. He can always run for office again, but people who die and gone forever. Make the most of your time with loved ones.
