So I nearly failed an essay. I know it isn't a huge deal but I tried really hard and I'm having a really hard time with doing poorly. Any suggestions for over coming perfectionism and moving past?

Don't worry about it. Struggling for perfection is a waste of energy.

Just allow yourself more time when the next essay is due.

Get some feedback from your tutor asking the reasons for your grade. Take the advice onboard and use it to develop your writing. Essay writing is a skill and like any other it requires practice and patience.

Read other essays and use them as a starting point for style and learning academic conventions.

Namaste.

What I find is that the energy helps you learn more about the subject.

Instead of thinking about the failure, rewrite the essay. I know no one will see it, but just do it for yourself, give yourself another chance. At least you'll know that you're not an almost failure, you just ran out of time that's all.

Sometimes it's better to do things when not under pressure. Just practice doing a bit of those things for your own enjoyment, and you'll get better at them.

Do things for fun, like board games and silly films or reading popular fiction. Take some time off of doing anything "important", relaxing is the best medicine.

Yep - I've been at the 'business end' of this situation.

- Try and get things in perspective, as you say, it was only one essay.

- Ensure that you do not get in the same situation again. Next essay, write out a plan of what you are going to do and show it to your lecturer in advance, they will be able to guide you.

- Accept that how ever well you do there is always a limit (I knew lecturers who REFUSED to give out high marks)

- Try and look up some anti stress methods.

"Nearly Failed" in my books is not failing at all - YOU PASSED - maybe you need to set more realistic achievement targets and when you reach them step up a level. This way you can bolster your self-esteem and stop feeling such a failure. Another suggestion DONT COMPARE - never ask a friend, brother or sister how they are doing as you will only rate yourself against their achievements rather than celebrating yours - Good Luck.

I am a cryer so once I have had a teary half hour I feel better and can cope with anything. Don't beat yourself up be proud that you tried really hard - that is a positive trait not a negative one

You need to ask for feedback from your lecturer /teacher. This will show you ares which need improving.
You are already dealing with disappointment by asking for help. You obviously want to do well so ask for help from your tutors. They will be impressed with your maturity.
Good luck in the future.
