Always pads... if you want to explore tampons wait until you are a bit older and have an idea of what your period is like... (heavy or light somewhere in between)
You should really talk to your mom about this or an adult woman who can help you!

Always ultrathin maxipads with wings.
The big thick kind can be uncomfortable and feel sort of like diapers.
Always brand is the best for any time you start your period because they are comfortable and prevent embarassing leaks.
