It's used to better view the cervix and open up the vaginal canal. Also used as a device of torture for those of us with long vaginas who have to request the long speculum every time. Grr.

Its not used to open the cervix...its used to spread the inner walls of the vagina so that the doctor can look at the woman's cervix, which is hidden far back and cannot be seen without using the speculum...

A speculum is a medical device sort of shaped like a duck's bill. It is inserted into the vagina and then opened so that the doctor can have a clear field of view of the vaginal walls and cervix (the entryway to the uterus).
