It's a story of a woman who struggles to raise a child so she teaches her daughter to be a man playa so she won't struggle like the mom did.
It's what, in my opinion, happens to all the servicemen who marry the young Fancys out there.

Fancy is about a poor family. Her mom sends her out on the streets, looking good. Fancy is a hooker for a while. She eventually becomes "well in" with some higher politicians, and makes her way through the ranks. ( if you get the meaning) She finally y settles down with a rich man and has everything she ever wanted. White trash hooker, turned Queen, basically.

Fancy is about a young girl whom was being raised by an impoverished single mother. Because her mother was too poor to care for her and her sibling she turned Fancy into a prostitute. Fancy went on to become a very successful escort. That is what the song is about.

ahh this is my favorite song. the song is about a young girl who's living with her mom and baby sister and her father's run off. when fancy, the daughter, turned 18 her mother sent her upstate because she was getting sick and would die soon. and there wasn't even enough food to feed the baby, so she was gonna die soon too. so fancy's mother made her up, dressed her up, put on her makeup, and gave her a locket that said 'to thine ownself be true'. but fancy didn't understand at that time why her mother was sending her away so she tore and drop the locket from her neck and left it and left to become a prostitute. she slept with a aristocrat, a king and a congressman for money and was soon rich enough to live in a georgia mansion. years later and after she made of life for herself, she went back to the shack she lived in with her mom and baby sibling. she visits her mother's grave and tells her that she understands now why she sent her away for to make something of herself and give her a better life. the phrase 'to thine ownself be true' is now a popular phrase thanks to this song. reba is so awesome, and i'm glad this is her signature song. you should watch the video. it's a little mini video and is so amazing. great work.
