One night I was robbed and assaulted in the parking lot of the apartment complex that I recently lived in. They have security gates but they do not work and the parking lot is very dark at night. I had a craniotomy in result from the blow to my head and have been out from work for two months now. Isn’t it the manager or the owners job of the apartment complex to keep a safe living environment for the residents? Am I titled to receive compensation from the apartment complex for neglect or something?

Yes, the Apartment complex's insurance company should cover the bill. Make sure you have proof, i.e. pictures or documentation that the security gates do not work, and place is unusually dark. Go to 3 different lawyers with free consultation, and choose the one you are most comfortable with. They will first send a letter and in most cases the insurance company will settle...

That's a tough one. On one hand, management doesn't really have control over people that may potentially assault residents. On the other hand if there is negligence in providing security, you may have a sound argument. I would contact an attorney to see if you have a case.

Speak with an attorney; landlords typically carry premises liability insurance to cover lawsuits regarding (among other things) security issues on their property.

I say yes. They provide the security gates which don't work and with the insufficient lighting you have a case. Call a lawyer ASAP!

It is not the fault of your apartment complex that you got robbed. It sucks that that happened to you, but I don't really see how it is the fault of the apartment complex. They did not rob you. Suing them is like suing McDonald's because you spilled your coffee on yourself and it was hot. Please don't be one of those people.
