I'm not talking about 8 hour trips but more like walks around the block, maybe a trip to the mall. How long should I wait?

That is up to you and when you feel like taking the baby out, theres no certain age to do so! people usually like waiting a few days to recover but in most cases ppl end up ttaking their baby out sooner! its all up to the mother! just got to make sure you dress them for the weather..hehe

Fresh air is not bad, nor a walk around the block, but I think most doctors recommend against public places until at least 4 to 6 weeks. And when you do start going to these places, try to do it when there is a little bit less contact, for example, have lunch at 2:00 or visit church at an earlier (less attended service).

You don't realize it until you are protecting your baby, but people are generally 'filthy'. We sneeze, wheeze, cough, sniffle without even thinking about it. It goes on all day long, and it affects far more surfaces than you'd possibly care to think about. It's not a big deal for us--we've developed an immunity, but for a child who doesn't have that same level of protection being out with the general public is a (slight) risk that you might not want to take.

With a newborn, you want to make sure the baby is healthy, and, god forbid, if the baby is not healthy, you want to minimize the number of reasons why that could be the case. The baby isn't going to say to the doctor "I have a headache" so if you can negate 'he caught a cold walking to the mall' or 'the waitress was sniffling when she served our food' the doctors are in a better position to determine what might be wrong with what little information that can be obtained by observation of a non-speaking infant.

Good luck

A walk outside is fine at any age, as long as it's not too cold and that baby is dressed appropriately for the weather. If you need to make a quick run to the store for some milk or something, that's okay too. I wouldn't go to the mall just yet, until she's had at least her first round of shots. People love to coo at new babies, and you don't want an unvaccinated newborn exposed to all kinds of people carrying all kinds of germs.

Outdoor walks should be okay as long as the air quality is good, but I would wait at least 2-3 weeks before taking the baby to the mall. The air circulation is not good in places like that and you'd be surprised how strangers like to walk up and touch babies without asking the parents.

As long as baby is healthy and you feel like it, NOW! Babies don't need to be cooped up in a house any more than parent's do.
As long as the weather is nice, but a bonnet on the little one, and a blanket and go outside.
I would however, advise against going to the mall for a while. It is cold and flu season right now and babies immune systems are low. Stay away from large crowds.

As long as the baby has no health issues, you can take baby out immediately. It's actually better for their health to be out in the fresh air rather than cooped up in a germy house. There's no reason you need to shut you and your baby in provided you feel well enough after delivery to go out.

I would just ask that others wash their hands, or use a baby wipe before holding the baby, but other than that...

We took our son out to the grocery store when he was 3 days old. We needed groceries and neither of us could bear to be away from him yet. :)

Dress your baby according to the weather and get outside. I wouldn't suggest a mall or any other germ-filled invironment until he's older and has the immune system built up. Babies thrive outside though, and a brisk walk and fresh air does wonders for mom.

as soon as you feel up to it. Both of my children where took to Wal Mart on the way home from the hospital at 3 days old. I was on bedrest for a month with both of them and I soo needed to do something before I died of boredom. After that we made daily trips somewhere. Neither one got any bad illnesses. Just remember to ask people to not touch or to touch only the babys feet. I found people were less likely to touch or get in the baby's face if I wore them in a snuggly carrier. My oldest even went to the rodeo at 9 days old. Unless your baby has a life threatening illness nothing is going to hurt them if you take them out early in life. They may get little colds but being exposed to the world actually boost their immune system and if you breast feed your immune system protects them too

as soon as you want to is fine. right now where i am the pollen is starting to cover everything so you might want to wait until after it rains if it's heavy where you are also. like the others said just keep the sun out of his or her eyes and dress appropriately. i would also wait a little longer for the mall.

I took my baby for a walk around the block in her second week. She fell asleep. All you got to do is make sure the suns not in their eyes and if they are in the sun put some baby sunscreen on them and a hat.
