Yesterday a few times, when I applied the brakes, after a second I would hear this "clunk" noise and it felt like something under my feet was falling out. My car still stopped normally. It didn't happen every time I applied the brakes and it didn't happen any on my way to work this morning. Any idea what might be wrong and how much this is going to cost me?

Also I really don't have time to fix this until next week. Is it possibile I will do more damage or my brakes will fail if I ignore it until then?

Yeah. I would definitely say you have a problem with your brakes. Any time you put off getting a brake problem looked at you risk making the problem a lot worse. (which equals a lot more money out of your pocket.) I would say to get it looked at as soon as you can. About the cost. . .
As a good rule of thumb, anything having to do with your brakes is going to cost you several hundred dollars.

It is ESSENTIAL to have functioning brakes. Although you could have something else loose that made the noise you still should have it checked out. Generally, brakes don't cost that much to fix. If you only need a bolt tightened on something else a good shop probably wouldn't charge for that. It doesn't take long to have a mechanic test drive your car if you make an appointment ahead of time, but I wouldn't ignore it.

Anita—
You don't tell us what kind of car.
What year, make, model, etc.
There are several possibilities, some only minor, and others an indication of serious repairs necessary, soon.
Considering the consequences of the sudden and unexpected loss of your brakes, if you can't address this now, then find something else to drive, or some other means of getting around.
Perhaps you can ask one of the local tire & brake shops for a "free" inspection and appraisal of your brakes, and an estimate of the cost of the repair.

Happy Motoring
