OK, I will be brutally honest.
I got my first "unorthodox" piercing when I was 17, my right eyebrow. Looking back on it I think I got it done because I idolized my older sister and she had alot of piercings. Also I think I just wanted to piss of my mom, but hey that's what you do at 17. Over the next year I got my lip, tongue and septum done, all for superficial reasons--- "shock value" if you will.
After I reached 20 I started to I guess identify myself with those who had piercings and I started to get ones I really desired. Ones I felt "fit me."
Now I am 23 and I have begun to realize that the main reason I started to get piercings was because I was an insecure person. And I wanted to do anything to draw attention away from my natural appearance.
These days I don't get too many new ones, I have gotten comfortable with the ones I have. I no longer get them for shock value ;)

Some piercings I did because I was young and rebellious (ie. my cartilage and navel when I was 18). I came from a very conservative family and wanted to "liberate" myself. NOTE: I waited till I was 18, paying for my own tuition, AND I went to a professional piercer.
Some piercings I did because I wanted the adrenaline rush (ie. eyebrow, lip, orbital). Piercings release a whole bunch of chemical in your brain that give you a high and what a cheap and safe way to get one. :)
Some I did for shock value (ie. my vertical hood). There is nothing funnier than going to your annual check up and having the doctor's jaw just drop. It is even funnier since I work in a hospital, in a very conservative town, and I definitely don't fit the stereotype of a girl into piercings. :)

Honestly, I was 5 when I got my ears pierced. I did it because all the girls were getting it done. Cultural influence made me get my ears pierced. I now love wearing and selecting earrings! I'm 29.
I'm glad they are pierced, but I wish I had not been so eager as a Kindergartener!

Do not know all but hear goes, art, personal markings, family markings, bible reasons, yet the good can also be bad which is sad, addictions hide in the colors, addictions are passed threw these needles, aids etc, can be passed threw getting the needles.

i think little girls sometimes only get their ears pierced because their mothers want them to, at least that's how it was for me.
i no longer wear my earrings.
but for year or so i wanted to get my lip pierced as a mean of self expression.

i have done all my piercings myself, the first one i got done was the top of my ear(in twelfth grade). at the time i did it, i did it because everyone else had the bottom of their ears pierced, and mine was unique. in college i did the bottom of my ears, cuz my boyfriend bought me diamond earrings, and i wanted to wear them both at the same time.
