I have an '80s Buick that comes with a digital fuel meter. Problem is, the number displayed on the DFM fluctuates by a great deal; when parked it reads 15, after 1 minute it reads 12, when in reverse it reads 22, when in D it reads 20, and so on. Even once it said E as empty and once I got to the gas station it read 12...

Please help as to how to fix this.

Some probable causes 1. Earth or other electrical contact problem between the sending unit in the fuel tank and the instrument panel. 2. Faulty sending unit in the tank. 3. Voltage variation in your car caused by dodgy voltage regulator or perhaps 4. some problem with electrics related to position of the gear selector.

Check the ground wire between the engine and the chassis and the one from the tank to the frame.
