Because, like all education, we do not teach children any more - we "prepare students" to take government tests. Children are nothing more than statistical units with which we improve the rating of our schools so that we can keep our jobs and keep inspectors off our backs. Everything it target driven and results driven and the actual joy of learning is squeezed out of everything.

My daughter just started primary school this term. She came back with a little ticket in her bag after two weeks saying "Jane has achieved her target number of smiley faces this week". I almost cried. "Taget number of smiley faces" - I ask you.

Would you enjoy this?

I was taught in the early 90s and loved primary school. These days though it's a very different ball game. The activities that I used to enjoy as a kid are put to the side to make way for learning. The year two class I taught last year had a maths test every week that counted towards their end-of-year grade!

So basically, there's too much pressure to learn. We've sacrificed the games and fun for the knuckle-down learning that shouldn't take place until they're muc, much older. It's sad, but the way the world is going.

It's like everything else nowadays, they do not get the enjoyment from the same things we did, in fact I think that unless their brains are stimulated for them. With some sort of electronic games etc they do not know how to entertain themselves.
Could you really see them making go karts, out of old pieces of wood, playing hide and seek etc? Why the very suggestion would guarantee you a look of total bewilderment, you don't see them playing in groups now, Only groups you see are gangs of youths and they're all anxiously collecting ASBO's, this country is certainly if not the world a different place to the one I grew up in life seemed so innocent then.

Some children don't enjoy school anymore because they can't play video games there! There are still several that like school, but for the most part I would blame technology as one of the reasons why children don't enjoy school as much.

Because they can not play anymore.
For example in the snow this week my son's were not allowed to play out in case any body got hurt by a snow ball. My son's love the snow but had to stay indoors. Teachers are to scared of being sued by parent's of 'poor little Mary who got a scratch off a snow ball'. Sad but true.
