If the rubber boot on the brake caliper piston is damaged and leaking fluid, can it be replaced/repaired? Or do you need to buy an entire new caliper?
this is for 2002 honda civic I-VTECH front drivers side! I a trying to help my son save money and would like to know how to go about fixing a brake fluid leak making the car have almost no stopping power! we are almost sure the boot has been pinched and causing problem, now what?

You will need to replace the caliper. The rubber boot is just a dust shield. Its a very easy job . Auto Zone or Advance auto has the part.
www.autozone.com has photos and instructions. You may need to look up an older model if the 2002 repair info is not available. I think 1995 is the latest but the procedure will work for your car.
You can also get rebuild kits.

The cheapest option is probably to buy a rebuild kit. I was intimidated by brakes, and all this talk about how the work has to be done in a clean room. It's actually very straightforward. Your rebuild kit will have a new seal. Purchasing a repair manual for the car will give you all the details you need about removing the caliper, disassembling it, reassembly, and bleeding the brakes. I've had good luck with Haynes manuals for VW and Saab.

it can be repaired but it is a lot easier and a whole lot faster to just buy a new one.
