The normal accepted answer is 1939, beginning with the blitz on Poland. The reason that is the accepted year is that even though there was fighting in Asia as early as 1937, it wasn't a World War until Europe became involved. Once Britain declared a state of war existed, her colonies became involved also. That meant Canada, Australia, India and so forth. France joined in and her colonies are considered involved also. Thus a World War. That does not mean every nation was directly involved, just that there was conflict in all regions of the world.
The United States became directly involved when attacked at Pearl Harbor, though before then the US had been involved in suppling Britain and was using political and economic power against Japan to stop the fighting in China. Some Americans were also fighting under volunteer forces in Britain and in China. The United States was also aware it would be involved and had mobilized by 1939.
Now some of the other answers are referring to Germany occuping other countries in Europe, though no declaration of war was made at those times. There were deaths, but no actual state of war. If you are looking for the origins of World War 2 in Europe, most state that the direct source is World War 1 and the way the Treaty of Versailles which punished Germany for causing that war. This punishment lead to the eventual collapse of democracy in Germany and the rise of Adolf Hitler. But alot of the sources go even further back than that. The antisemitism can be traced back to the beginnings of Christanity in Europe and much of the poltiical animosity goes to the conflicts between the various nations throughout Europes history.

it was officially started in 1939, after germany's polish blitzkrieg. But the germans didn't fight the British and French until 1940 (Fall Gelb, transalted into Case Yellow or soemthing, the Invasion of France and the Low Countries). I'm pretty sure the period between 1939 to 1940 was called the "phony war", because war was declared but there wasn't any fighting happening.

Whoa, this is one question that I feel most of the answers are totally off-base. This comes from the classic Euro-centric view. Most people believe the second world war actually began in 1931 with the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, an event sometimes referred to as "the Manchurian Incident". The war begins in Europe many years later.

Depends on which country you're asking.
1939: Nazis invade Poland. Since England and Poland signed a treaty, and Germany signed ones with Russia and Italy. It's the inital start of WWII.

I guess it depends on definitions and where one was.
1931 – Japan invades Manchuria
1931 – fighting begins between China and Japan
1937 – full scale invasion of China by Japan
1939 – Germany invades Poland
1939 – Germany invades Finland and the rest of Europe and Russia except GB
1941 – Japan attacks the US (Pearl Harbor, then the Philippines)
