Look on the back of your feed bags- they will tell you the exact same thing I'm about to tell you.

Your horse should be getting 1/2 lb of feed for every 100 lbs of body weight at each feeding. I keep it a general rule of thumb to never feed over 5 lbs at each feeding. So if your horse is much larger than the average 1000-1200 lbs, then you may have to break your feeding times where the extra over 5 lbs is being fed at a 3rd feeding.
As for hay- I can't tell you an exact amount because so many people feed different types of hay and at different qualities. Your best bet is to go by what your eye tells you. If your horse is over weight you may choose to add a little bit extra hay each week until your horses weight is back up or if he is over weight you may choose only to feed 20 lbs of hay a day with smaller portions of feed. Some people also opt to leave their horse on free choice hay.

Overall if you are questioning your horses feed regime, I would discuss this with your vet. I as a vet, when a client asks how much they should be feeding just have them bring their horse to my ranch. Free of cost I measure them with a weight tape and decide whether they are over or under weight. I then tell them the exact amount of feed and on average the minimal amount of hay their horse should be getting to reach what their weight should be at. Most vets will give you a free consultation to determine this with only extra costs if tests need to be drawn.

we let our horses eat whatever they want of hay because we most always have hay set in the pasture for them if we are not riding them, and they get rode almost every day. as for the feed it depends on what kind of because they would have different weights and that what you go by. You can use the bag as a guide line but if that is more that you normally feed your horse you will need to increase a little at a time because you drastically change how the horse is fed it will cause the horse to colic.
