You have to remember the state of politics of the day and the medical knowledge. It was politically important to have a male heir and they thought that the woman controlled the sex of the child which is one of the reasons Henry split with Rome. The two wives he had executed he thought had been unfaithful to him ( he may well have been right) and that was of course treason as the king was the head of the country so being unfaithful to the head of the country is being unfaithful to your country and the penalty for treason is death.
