The Odyssey is about a journey home made by a war hero. It discusses its trials and triumphs. If you know any older person, or even if you dont, that went to war overseas, that could be a good start. It is a coming of age epic, but its more about the journey and homecoming. I would go with that....you could even talk about yourself. For example, you go away to camp and you have an akwardly hard time returning home. Hope that helped

The Odyssey Short Story

In spite of all those subthemes you may find, the real theme of the Odyssey was his long journey home, overcoming many obstacles. One example of a takeoff on that theme is the movie O Brother Where Art Thou? Odysseus, like the George Clooney character, won out more by using his wits than by feats of physical strength.

In your story, somebody is coming home from far away after a long absence. It could be a lost dog, a runaway kid, an ex-con released from jail, a soldier home from Iraq, a college freshman on vacation stranded by snow, etc. It could be comic or tragic, or a combination of the two. In a short story, you won't have time to develop very many adventures, so you should probably just describe a couple of them fully and make reference to the others. Your ending should be the finish line of the journey, but you might want to throw in a surprise as to what the wanderer finds when s/he gets there.

Here are a few ideas:
1. A Comparison of Iliad and Odyssey
Although both works are credited to Homer, The Iliad and The Odyssey provide two remarkably different views on the nature of the Olympian Gods, their relationship to humanity, and the general lot of mortals throughout their all too brief lives. As a result of these differences, both stories end up sending contrasting messages about life in general.

2. Comparison of Cold Mountain and the Odyssey
“Cold Mountain” is the story of a confederate soldier named Inman and his journey back to his homeland after years of fighting in the civil war, along the way he meets many interesting personalities some benign some malevolent. The second focus of the story is on Inman’s lover Ada and her struggle to learn how to live without her father, Inman and servants. “The Odyssey” is the story of an Ithacan king named Odysseus and his journey back to his homeland after years of fighting in the Trojan War, along the way he meets many interesting personalities some benign and some malevolent. The second focus of the story is on Odysseus’s wife Penelope and her struggle to live without her husband. The two stories sound very similar on the surface, but how similar are they really after the two line synopsis? “Cold Mountain” has frequently been called a modern “Odyssey” but is this an accurate description?

3. Comparing Homer's Odyssey and The Epic of Gilgamesh
Both The Odyssey and the Epic of Gilgamesh are two incredible stories written long ago. These two epics share many of the same concepts. Such as the nostro (the Greek term for homecoming), xenis (guest/host relationship), oikos (household), and aganoriss (recognition). In both epics these themes are illustrated.

4. Comparing Sorrows of Young Werther and The Odyssey
In Goethe's Sorrows of Young Werther, Werther compares himself with the suitors from Homer's Odyssey. At first his comparison seems only to be an ironic parallel. Like other instances where Werther is over-dramatic and silly in his grand metaphors, it is natural to laugh at the comparison, take little notice, and continue reading. But, in this case, the comparison has several layers of depth since Charlotte, too, has much in common with another Homerian character: Penelope. Charlotte's character resonates with Penelope's because they share many roles: both play the nurturing mother, the loyal wife. And, paradoxically they play these roles of the mother and wife while simultaneously acting as unconscious sirens. Because both Charlotte's and Werther's lives are fashioned so closely to Penelope's and the suitors, Werther's relationship with Charlotte also parallels the suitors' treatment by Penelope: he is destroyed by his love for her.
